Stephen Clark Flutist

Artist Overview

Equally at home in both the fields of classical and popular music, Stephen is one of only a handful of flute players to maintain an active solo career internationally. He has performed throughout the United Kingdom, Ireland, Finland, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Croatia, Mexico, Chile, Egypt, Libya, Malta, Australia, South Africa, Indonesia, Brazil, Slovenia, Canada and the U.S.A. He has also performed extensively as guest principal flute with several orchestras in the UK and abroad.

Stephen was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1983 and began playing the flute when he was 14 years old. He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and on a scholarship at the Royal Northern College of Music. At 21 years old, and in the same year, he won 2nd prize in the Scottish Mozart Competition, 1st prize in the prestigious RSAMD Concerto Competition and was awarded the highly sought after Musicians Benevolent Fund/Oxford Flute prize. Together these provided Stephen with a platform to launch an international career.

Stephen is regularly invited to lead workshops and master classes both in the UK and abroad. Greatly dedicated to the promotion of music to children and young people, Stephen has been a mentor for the Music For Youth Initiative of Scotland and Yehudi Menuhin's Live Music Now Scheme. From 2009-2011 Stephen was the Artistic Director of the Birmingham Flute Orchestra and in 2012 was invited to take up the position of Honorary President of the Lisburn Flute Orchestra; Northern Ireland's 1st cross community ensemble of its kind which serves the sole purpose of promoting peace through music making.

He is often invited to perform on some of the world's most luxurious cruise liners and has been a headline performer for Seabourn, Holland America Line, Silversea, Crystal, Azamara, P&O, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas cruise lines.

Stephen has recorded for Classic FM, Amadeus, Linn Records and for the Naxos label and broadcast live on Northern Ireland's 7FM and BBC Radio 3. He released his debut solo album "EXPLOSIVE" in late 2013. Stephen has appeared on screen as the flute player in both the BBC's period drama series "Desperate Romantics" and ITV's feature film "Miss Marple - The Secret of Chimneys".
